It all starts with you. Who is running for District Attorney? Why are they running? What is their record? Does our current DA have any skeletons? Keep reading to learn more.
Steve Howe is the current Republican DA of Johnson County. Steve Howe was elected back in 2008. In 2020, during Mr. Howe's first contested election since 2008, the JOCO DA's office only had an abysmal 53% win rate at trial - seemingly making trials in JOCO more of a coin flip. This 53% win rate indicates to this day that Steve Howe's office is willing to try cases based on non-convincing evidence, and is willing to take a coinflip on if they'll win. To put that damming fact into context, former District Attorney Paul Morrison said, "The conviction rate should be well over 60%. Probably closer to 70 if you have good trial lawyers.”
Steve Howe squeaked past that election, barely drawing 50% of the votes in JOCO and winning by less than 4 points.
Since then, multiple scandals have occurred trashing the good reputation of the JOCO DA's office. For Example in 2023, despite "clear evidence" Overland Park Police Officers were misusing charity funds and enriching themselves to the tune of tens of thousands of dollars, Steve Howe refused to file criminal charges. The OPPD Charity would be shuttered.
At the beginning of 2024, a watchdog group that operates as an arm of the Kansas State Supreme Court dismissed a complaint against Steve Howe for "writing a false account" "with caution". They said in their complaint that the complaint was not meritless, and they expressed a deep concern for Howe's conduct. Despite their deep concern and merit-filled findings, "The office rarely sanctions prosecutors. A 2020 investigation by Kansas Reflector found multiple cases in which complaints against prosecutors had dragged on for more than five years, even when there was compelling evidence of misconduct."
Isaiah personally knew a man named David Sweet. David was shot and killed by the Olathe Police Department. David was an avid AA member with years of sobriety. Despite being an odd person, Isaiah and David were friends. David was an odd man, older, and quite feeble. Despite this, David was like his last name. Sweet. Always asking how everyone is and trying to help out. In the summer of 2023, it is said David found a knife and approached police officers. It is believed David was trying to find the owners of the knife or turn the knife into police, instead of leaving it on the streets of Olathe. For his good deed, the Olathe officers shot David to death. Steve Howe refused to press charges against the officers, despite damming bodycam footage being released to the media.
The Kansas City Star was able to get some behind-the-scenes reporting, where they state as fact Steve Howe fosters a "toxic work environment". Accusations range from a former female assistant district attorney being denied a transfer from the sex crimes and child abuse unit as she dealt with postpartum issues to another former female employee being told it wouldn’t be fair for her to receive a promotion because she was “too pregnant and tired.”
Did you know that just a few short months ago you were able to listen to the police scanners? You could get all your news in real-time. The JOCO DA's office decided instead of letting you get a first-hand account of all information, they would decide the appropriate information for you to consume.
David Greenwald is the current head of the Douglas County drug unit. David is the only other individual in this race other than Steve Howe running as a Republican. David was born and raised in Overland Park and has a thriving career as a prosecutor. David briefly worked for the JOCO DA's office in 2019, but left for the Douglas County DA's office in 2021.
Zach Thomas ran against Steve Howe in 2020. Zach Thomas is a defense attorney who was born and raised in Johnson County. Zach wants more programs for juveniles, to treat violent crime more severely, and to be more transparent. Zach was able to garner over 46% of the vote last election cycle and looks to bring more success this time around.
Vanessa is a former prosecutor in Steve Howe's office. Vanessa's biography states, "I saw that being a prosecutor was not the only way to serve those who need protection. I knew from my time as a prosecutor that things aren’t always what they seem and that sometimes citizens who are facing a fight with the government need committed counsel to help them through it.”
Johnson County needs a leader and a DA they can trust, not a ragtag group of sophomore attorneys throwing things at the wall and hoping ~50% of it sticks. Steve Howe's opponents are primarily running on trust. Do not let the police or DA spoon-feed you what news they deem appropriate for you, vote to make sure you know what's happening in Johnson County.
